What is Foxit?

Foxit is a long-standing PDF software company best known for Foxit PDF Editor and the free Foxit PDF Reader. In recent releases it has built a layer of AI tools on top of those apps, branded Foxit AI, which covers an in-document assistant, a multi-document Workspace and an on-device Local AI mode.

This review focuses on those AI capabilities and the PDF Editor plans that bundle them. Foxit targets businesses, legal and finance teams, and individual professionals who handle many PDFs and want to summarise, translate, query or redact them without leaving their editor.

Key Features of Foxit

PDF AI Assistant

Built into PDF Editor and PDF Reader on desktop, web and mobile, the assistant can chat about a document with citations, summarise long files, translate whole documents and rewrite or proofread text. You can also describe an edit, such as redacting every ID number, and let it carry out the change.

Workspace for multi-document projects

Workspace lets you load up to 100 files into one project, ask questions across all of them and generate editable reports, presentations, diagrams, Markdown or HTML. You can switch between OpenAI and Google models, and preset Skills produce summaries, mind maps, quizzes or flashcards.

Local AI

For confidential files, Local AI runs the assistant on your own hardware through Microsoft Foundry Local, or against your own OpenAI-compatible model. Chat, summaries, bookmarks and translation work offline in this mode, while features such as podcasts and image generation still need the cloud.

Smart Redact and document safety

PDF Editor+ adds AI Smart Redact to find and remove personal information. A PDF Action Inspector can also flag hidden scripts before you sign or print a file.

Audio and visual extras

The assistant can read documents aloud, turn them into podcast-style audio, create AI bookmarks for long files and generate images from a prompt.

Full PDF toolkit

Beneath the AI layer sits a complete editor: text and page editing, Office conversion, OCR, forms, comparison, password protection and eSignatures.

Foxit Pricing

Every Foxit account gets 300 AI credits per month free. Heavier AI users can buy the AI Assistant subscription on its own, or choose a PDF Editor plan. Prices below are the annual rates in USD; Foxit also lists monthly billing from $10.99, a perpetual PDF Editor 14 license at $209.99, a 14-day free trial of PDF Editor+ without a credit card, and an education discount.

Prices checked on October 27, 2026; check the official pricing page for current plans.

Who Should Use Foxit?

  • Professionals who already work in PDFs and want summaries and translations inside the editor.
  • Legal, finance and healthcare teams that need on-device AI for sensitive documents.
  • Researchers and consultants turning a stack of source files into reports or slides.
  • Organisations looking for a lower-cost Acrobat alternative with eSign included.

Is Foxit Worth It?

Foxit is a strong choice if you need a full PDF editor and want AI built in rather than bolted on through a separate chat app. The free monthly credits let you test the assistant at no cost, and Local AI is a genuine differentiator for privacy-sensitive work.

On the other hand, AI is only part of what you pay for: the editor plans are priced per user per year, the free credit allowance is modest, and some AI features (podcasts, image generation, connectors) require the cloud. If you only want to chat with the occasional PDF, a lighter AI tool may be cheaper. Try PDF Editor+ for 14 days to see which features you actually use.
