What is Pencil?

Pencil is a generative AI platform for marketing teams that want to produce and test ad creative at scale. Rather than tying users to a single model, it pulls models from providers such as OpenAI, Google, Adobe, Runway and Stability AI into one workspace, so a team can write copy, create images and videos, assemble ads and push them to ad networks from the same place. You can explore it at trypencil.com.

The company now describes Pencil as an AI operating system for marketing. In practice it serves two audiences: small businesses and growing teams on self-serve monthly plans, and large brands that need governance, legal protections and managed services around their generative AI work.

Key Features of Pencil

Multi-model creative generation

Pencil acts as an orchestration layer over several image, video and text models. As new models launch, they can be used inside the same workflow instead of requiring a separate subscription.

Ready-made and custom agents

The platform includes prebuilt agents for common marketing jobs, and users can build their own agents or chain multi-step agentic workflows for specific use cases.

Ad launch and performance insights

Connected ad accounts let you publish to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Google Display, DV360 and LinkedIn. Pencil then shows result dashboards and creative insights, and it can score new creatives with performance predictions.

Brand library

Uploading logos, fonts, colours, product shots and sample videos gives the models context about your brand. Pencil recommends at least a handful of product images and videos for the best output.

Enterprise governance

For larger customers Pencil lists SOC 2 Type II controls, a no-train policy for customer data, full IP ownership, role-based access and brand-safety controls across teams and markets.

Pencil Pricing

Pencil sells monthly subscriptions based on a generation allowance. A generation is counted, in most cases, each time you ask an AI model to produce something. Annual billing saves around 20%.

On Core and Growth you cannot go beyond your monthly generation quota; you either upgrade or wait for the next cycle. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, with charges ending at the close of the billing period. The FAQ notes that refunds are not processed for fees incurred after a free trial has been upgraded to a paid plan.

Who Should Use Pencil?

  • Performance marketers who need many ad variations for testing across social and display networks.
  • E-commerce and DTC brands turning product photos into image and video ads.
  • Agencies producing creative for several brands from one platform.
  • Enterprise marketing teams that need governance, IP terms and access controls around generative AI.

Is Pencil Worth It?

Pencil is a strong fit when ad creative volume is the bottleneck. Having several leading models, a brand library, ad-network publishing and performance feedback in one product removes a lot of switching between tools, and the enterprise controls are more complete than in most creative generators.

The trade-offs are worth weighing. The self-serve plans cap generations at 50 or 250 per month, which heavy testers may reach quickly, and output quality depends on the brand assets you supply. Much of the marketing and many of the advanced options, such as bulk feed generation, custom models and managed services, are aimed at enterprise buyers on custom pricing. Small teams who mainly want quick social posts may find simpler, cheaper tools enough, while brands running paid media at scale are the people Pencil is built for.
