What is Underwriter?

Underwriter is an AI website and app builder that works through chat. You describe the site you want in plain English, and it generates the pages, layout, components and copy, then lets you keep refining the result by sending further messages. The platform is aimed at people who need a working website without writing code, such as founders, freelancers, creators and small agencies, while still offering a code viewer for those who want to look under the hood.

According to the FAQ, it can produce landing pages, portfolios, online stores, dashboards and SaaS-style apps, and it handles publishing from the same workspace.

Key Features of Underwriter

Prompt-to-website generation

A single description is turned into a site structure with pages, sections and content. You can then change headings, colours, layouts or copy by asking in chat instead of clicking through an editor.

Live preview

Edits are shown in a real-time preview while the site is being built, so you can check changes before publishing.

Visual site structure

A map view shows pages, navigation and components and how they connect, which makes larger generated sites easier to follow.

Built-in code viewer

Developers can inspect the generated code and make more advanced changes when the chat approach is not precise enough.

Publishing and deployment

Sites can be published and updated from inside Underwriter, and paid plans list Vercel deployment.

Assistant and content tools

An in-app assistant answers questions while you build. Paid tiers add web search in chat, and the Pro and Agency plans include UnderwriterGen for creating reels and social posts.

Underwriter Pricing

Underwriter uses monthly credit subscriptions, with pay-as-you-go top-ups available on every paid plan. Higher tiers raise the credit allowance, the number of websites and the AI model level. Plans can be cancelled at any time and billing runs through Stripe.

Prices checked on October 27, 2026; check the official pricing page for current plans.

Who Should Use Underwriter?

  • Small business owners who need a landing page or simple site quickly.
  • Founders testing product ideas with a working front end.
  • Freelancers and agencies producing many client sites (Agency plan with team seats and API).
  • Creators who want a portfolio without learning a site builder.
  • Developers who want an AI-generated starting point they can inspect in code.

Is Underwriter Worth It?

Underwriter offers a straightforward way to go from an idea to a published website by chatting, and the free plan with 200 monthly credits makes it easy to test. The live preview, visual structure view and code viewer give it more transparency than some prompt-only builders, and paid plans are reasonably priced for the number of sites included.

There are open questions to weigh. Credit use per edit is not spelled out on the public page, so it is hard to predict how far an allowance will go. The free plan is limited to one site and the lighter model, team seats and API access sit on the $99 Agency tier, and the main underwriter.dev domain did not load when we checked, with the product running from the app subdomain. Start on the free plan, build a test page and see how quickly credits are used before you commit.
